Gel Quantifier Image Analysis Software

Gel-Quant Electrophoresis Image Analysis Software has been developed to meet the requirements of different applications both in applied and basic sciences, especially:

       molecular biology
       medical diagnostics
       genetics
       environmental studies
       biotechnology
       microbiology

Use Gel-Quant to analyse one dimensional gel images.  After electrophoresis, scan your gel image into a bitmap format.  Once the image is digitised, use Gel-Quant to:

provide mass and molecular weight analysis
automatically locate the lanes on the gel image
automatically straighten curved and distorted lanes
select an area of interest from the image for further processing
graphically present each lane profile separately or overlay lanes of interest
perform Gaussian curve fitting for bands within lanes
schematically present the processed bands (Metagel)
arrange data from calculations made on the processed gel into a Data Table
convert gel images from negative to positive

Results of the entire process, including the original image and analysis data, can be stored and printed.  Results can also be exported in several common formats eg, Excel.

Gel Processing with Gel-Quant Software

The following is a step-by-step example of gel processing of PCR Fragments with Gel-Quant software.  Click on the icons to view a sample screen.

1. Initial gel image.  New Image Icon
Scanned gel images need to be in grey, 8-bit, BMP format.

2. Automated Lane Finding. Automated Lane Icon
Lanes can be located either automatically or manually. Found lanes are marked with coloured borders.

3. Lane Straightening.   Lane Straight Icon
An important step in gel image preparation is lane straightening. The Lane Straightening Tool allows lanes to be corrected if they are not straight or parallel to each other.

4. Removing "Smiles" No Smiles Icon
Use the deserpation tool to remove the inclination and smiles of all bands in particular lanes.  This function does not influence the position of the band medians.

5. Standards Line Up   Standards Line Up
Use this tool to mark the "standards" lanes.  This function ensures the known standards are identical for each standards lane.

6. Standards Setting   Standards Setting Icon
Use the Standards Setting tool to match the molecular weights of standards with the positions of the corresponding bands.

7. Lane Profiles   Lane Profile Icon
Click the Lane Profiles Tool to view a graphic presentation of the marked lanes.

8. Data Table Data Table Icon
Data from calculations made on the processed gel is presented in table form.   There are several different modes of data presentation available, as well as the ability to sort data and customise column headings.  Tables can be saved and stored, and exported into other formats, including Excel.
