News Alert: ProCite and PubMed

We have recently received reports of problems searching PubMed within ProCite v5.03 where the program is not downloading all of the matching references found in the search. We have verified this behaviour and we are currently in communication with PubMed authorities as we investigate the cause and work towards a resolution. For now we recommend that if you have difficulty searching PubMed using ProCite v5.03, you use the "Importing text data from PubMed into ProCite for Windows" procedure outlined below as a workaround. We will advise any news we have on this issue as soon as it is available.

You can use the following procedures to import text records from PubMed into ProCite (note that Macintosh instructions are in a separate section below):

Importing text data from PubMed into ProCite for Windows:
Browse the PubMed (NLM) website and save your references into a text file that can be imported into the software. To do this:

  1. Browse to the PubMed website through an Internet browser (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez).
  2. Enter your searches in the website (Select "Clipboard" from the "Send to" drop down menu to save records from multiple searches as you work).
  3. On the search results page, select "MEDLINE" in the dropdown menu next to the "Display" button.
  4. Choose "File" from the "Send to" drop-down list, and then click on "Send to."
  5. Select "Save" on the following screen. In the next screen you will be able to change the file name (save with a *.txt extension).
  6. In ProCite, open the database where you would like these references saved.
  7. Select the "Tools…Import Text File" command.
  8. Select the File Type "Tagged," the File Format "PubMed," and your Target Database.
  9. Click the Transfer button to begin the import.

The text references that you downloaded from the website will be imported into your database. If you have any questions, please feel free to call our technical support department.

Macintosh ProCite v4 and v5 users:

Mac ProCite v5 users: We have confirmed that recent changes being implemented by PubMed will cause the Internet Search feature in Macintosh v5.x to perform unreliably. Unfortunately, we will not be able to update ProCite for the Macintosh to maintain the Internet Search connectivity with PubMed.

Importing text data from PubMed into ProCite v4 and v5 for Macintosh:

You will still be able to browse the PubMed website and save your references into a text file that can be imported into ProCite. To do this:

In the next screen you will be able to change the file name (we recommend saving with a *.txt extension).
  6. Open the download text file from PubMed into your word processor and choose "Save As..." from the "File" menu.
  7. Select the format: "Text only with line breaks."
  8. Close the file.
  9. In ProCite, open the database where you would like these references saved.
  10. Select the "Tools…Import Text File" command.
  11. Select the File Type "Tagged," the File Format "PubMed," and your Target Database.
  12. Click the Transfer button to begin the import.

The text references that you downloaded from the website will be imported into your database. If you have any questions, please feel free to call our technical support department.

OS X Users:
At this time, we have no plans to introduce an OS X version of ProCite for Macintosh.  If you are running OS X or plan to, we encourage you to consider upgrading to EndNote for the Macintosh.  Please contact us for details.
