Using ProCite with Microsoft Windows Vista Based on tests ResearchSoft with ProCite version 5.0.3, the following compatibility issues between Reference Manager and Microsoft Windows Vista have been identified. It is possible to install and run this version of ProCite without Vista-specific compatibility issues with the exceptions listed below. If you encounter a technical problem and you are running Windows Vista, please report it to us. We will do our best to resolve the issue or find an acceptable workaround. Iinformation about any known Vista compatibility issues will be posted here. Known Windows Vista Compatibility Issues 1. The location of the Word Startup folder is different on a Vista PC than previous versions of Windows, so the Cite While You Write (CWYW) tools may need to be manually installed. Click here for instructions. 2. Ovid databases can only be directly exported into ProCite, if you install the Export Plugin (which will have an error message about an old install script) and also download the latest OvidWeb.cfg file and manually save it directly to your ProCite/Config directory. ResearchSoft has identified major incompatabilites with Word 2007 and ProCite and do not recommend using ProCite with Word 2007 * Word 2007 will sometimes crash with the message "Microsoft Office Word has encountered a problem and needs to close" when using the Scan Document command. * Word 2007 will sometimes crash with the message "Microsoft Office Word has encountered a problem and needs to close", if you use the Revert to Original Text command and deleted the bibliography.
Some of the required system files or program files were not installed, were deleted, or have been damaged. Re-install ProCite.
You have an outdated MFC42.DLL in your Windows System Folder. Rename the file and reinstall ProCite.
The proper support files are not installed. On a single user PC, reinstall ProCite. On a network PC, run the workstation installation process on that individual PC. To run the workstation installation, locate and double-click the file Netsetup found in the ProCite folder on the network server. Follow the on-screen instructions.
You have tried to open a file that is either damaged, or is not a ProCite file. ProCite may be set to automatically open the last opened ProCite file. It that file is severely damaged, ProCite attempts to open it and stalls. To start the ProCite program only, without the last opened file, hold down the Shift key whilst you double-click the ProCite icon. You can then use the File Menu to Open a database. You may need to rebuild the database ProCite originally attempted to open.
In general, 10 is the maximum. It can be less if you have very long file and/or path names because there is a limitation on the combined total of file and path names. NOTE: This does not affect CWYW. You can link to any number of databases.
The dash following the year indicates 1979 and any later year. To retrieve only those dates with the year 1994 in them, you would need to enter either "Date contains 1994" or "Date exactly 1994" (if your records contain year only).
"Mark by Date" leaves the original (ie, first entered) record of each set of duplicates unmarked and marks all later duplicates. The "first entered date" is internal and is not visible to the user.
The record list does not support styled text. The styles appear in edit record and the bibliographies, but do not display in the record list.
The record list displays everything in the default font. While you may have applied a different font to text in Edit Record, and that font will print correctly in your bibliographies, the text appears in the record list in the default font.
Windows determines how words are defined for sorting. Windows 3.1 removes non-alphanumeric characters for sorting, while Windows 95 replaces non-alphanumeric characters with spaces. For example, "Ces*ti,B.B" would appear before "Cesko,B.B" because the asterisk is replaced by a space before sorting.
Empty fields have been suppressed. From the View Menu, choose Configure Edit Record. Make sure the Show Empty Fields option is selected. This option allows suppression of all empty fields in your database records. Tip: You can also turn the Show Empty Fields option on and off with a toolbar icon.
The workform used for the record cannot be found. The workform name does not appear in the workform drop-down list. It may have been moved or even deleted. Do one of the following:
Mark the records that use the unknown workform, then do a Global Change Workform to assign the new workform to those records. You will need to modify output styles to define output for the new workform.
In ProCite, turn toolbars off and on from the View menu. In your word processor, you can turn the ProCite toolbar on or off. Usually a right-mouse click anywhere in the toolbar area of a program will display a list of toolbars to toggle on and off.
Either fields have been suppressed for printing, or your output style does not list these fields to print.
If a record does not display any text when previewed, or if it is missing when printing a bibliography, there is most likely no workform style defined for the workform used by the record, and/or the output style has no Default style defined. You must edit the output style to define output for the workform.
If ProCite does not detect your wordprocessor during installation, then the ProCite toolbar will not display in your wordprocessor. You will need to use Explorer to copy the appropriate files from your CWYW sub-directory, into different folders, depending on which wordprocessor you use. Please make sure both ProCite and the word processor are closed prior to copying files. Instructions for Word Users (Windows and Macintosh)
After installing the required files, exit and restart Word. The ProCite 5 commands should appear on the Tools Menu.
Instructions for WordPerfect Users: The required WordPerfect files are located in ProCite's CWYW folder. You need to tell WordPerfect where to find these files. To add Cite-While-You-Write support manually for WordPerfect 7.x, 8.x or 9: 1. Run Regedit.exe (which should be located in the Windows folder). 2. Navigate to: For WordPerfect 7.x: For WordPerfect 8.x: For WordPerfect 9: 3. Insert a new string value named DLL#, where # is a number from 1 to 16. Set the new string value's data to: For WordPerfect 7.x: For WordPerfect 7.x: For WordPerfect 7.x: 4. Exit Regedit. 5. Restart WordPerfect. The Cite-While-You-Write commands should be available under the Tools Menu.
WordPerfect 10 Users: WordPerfect v10 was released after ProCite
v5.
This message appears when you attempt to re-generate a bibliography in a word processor. Your cursor is inside the bookmark ProCite created at the beginning of the reference list. You can see the bookmark only if "Reveal Codes" or "Reveal Field Codes" is switched on. Move your cursor to the beginning of the document before re-generating the bibliography.
An edit record window, output style or other window is the active Window in ProCite. The record list window must be active in ProCite to allow insertion of marked records. Close or minimise the other window(s) to make the record list active.
An intext citation has been linked to a record in ProCite. Subsequently, that record has been deleted. Then, when the bibliography was generated, ProCite could not find this record. You must either delete the citation. Or re-insert the record in your database, highlight the in-text citation in your document and click Revert to Original Text, then Insert the citation again to update the link.
ProCite v4 was released prior to Word 2000, therefore 100% compatibility is not guaranteed. The following work-around should solve the issue, however, if you do encounter problems, then you will need to upgrade to ProCite v5. Please make sure both ProCite and Word 2000 are closed prior to copying files. Using the Windows Explorer, copy these files from the ProCite CWYW folder to the Word startup folder:
The Word Startup Folder is typically: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Startup This folder also needs to be specified in Word's Tools, Options, File Locations dialogue. Check the folder location before copying any files.
First make sure that the download file is a text only file. Display it with ProCite - choose Import Text File from the Tools menu and open the download file. If you see odd characters or strange formatting, then the file is not plain text. You must download to a text file. Once the file is downloaded you can view it with a word processor - but do not save it as a word processor document. Once you do that, it is no longer a text-only file. Are you using the correct configuration file? For example, the Medline database is offered by several different information providers, including Medlars, SilverPlatter, etc. Each provider may retrieve the same records in a slightly different format, so using the appropriate configuration file is critical. If the download file is in ASCII format and you are using the correct configuration file, then ProCite is either not identifying the beginning of each record or the beginning of fields. See the Biblio-Link II Manual on the ProCite CD-ROM for information on how to add and map field tags.
Open the configuration file with Biblio-Link II. Double-click on the database name and make sure each field is included and mapped to a corresponding ProCite field. Map to fields that are included in the target workform. Make sure fields you want are NOT mapped to Do Not Transfer. See the Biblio-Link II Manual on the ProCite CD-ROM for more information.
You need to set the appropriate line continuation option in the configuration file. In your download file, do the second and subsequent lines of a field start at the left hand margin or are they indented? Open the configuration file with Biblio-Link II and from the Configuration menu, select Field Identification. Change the Line Continuation to Indented.
You need to specify how to identify the beginning of each new record, or possibly how to identify the end of each record. Find something unique that starts each record; it may be a number, a consistent string of text, or a field tag. Open the configuration file with Biblio-Link II, and from the Configuration menu, select Record Identification. Enter the appropriate information. See the Biblio-Link II Manual on the ProCite CD-ROM for more information.
Open the configuration file with Biblio-Link II. Double-click on the database name and make sure the fields you don't want are listed and are mapped to Do Not Transfer.
Check the author name format in your download file. Then, open the configuration file with Biblio-Link II and double-click on the database name. Make sure the author field(s) for this database are assigned the field type Author. Then set the appropriate author field format for the database. Highlight the database name, then go to the Configuration menu and select Author Field Format. Select the author format and separator that matches author names in the download file. See the Biblio-Link II Manual on the ProCite CD-ROM for more information. If an author field uses commas, both as part of the author name and to separate multiple author names, Biblio-Link II may not be able to translate the data properly. For example: Jones, Robert, Smith, William, James, Brown, Randall Biblio-Link II cannot distinguish the beginning of each new author name. In this case, you should change the author field type to Normal and then edit the author names after transferring the data into ProCite.
