Reference Manager Network
Reference Manager is the ONLY true network bibliographic management software
Users can simultaneously edit the same record within the same database. Databases can be shared on a network, allowing users to read and write to the same database down to the field level. Reference Manager is the only bibliographic management system to give you this capability.
Reference Manager offers you the flexibility of two different licence types, both available in 5-user packs:
a) Workstation Licence:
The Reference Manager Workstation Licence provides each individual licensed user with access to Reference Manager at all times. The number of users is determined by the number of workstations which will access the program. Each 5-User Workstation Licence provides five individual users with access to Reference Manager at all times.
Advantages:
There are two main advantages of the workstation licence:
- Licensed users have access to Reference Manager at all times. They are never locked out if others are already using the program, as can happen with a concurrent licence.
- The workstation licence also allows installation of Reference Manager on a notebook computer, so each licensed user is able to work both at the office and when the computer is undocked, or portable.
Licences can also be re-assigned to other users. For example, if one member of a workgroup moves to another department and no longer needs to use Reference Manager.
Potential disadvantages: a workstation licence must be purchased for each individual workstation where Reference Manager is to be made available. If you need to make Reference Manager available to a large number of workstations on the network, then a concurrent licence may better suit your needs.

b) Concurrent Licence:
The Concurrent Licence allows a limited number of simultaneous users to access Reference Manager via a network server. The minimum number of concurrent users is five and the suggested ratio of users to concurrent licences is 4:1 ie, one concurrent licence to support four users. (This ratio is simply intended as a guideline and may vary based on how actively the pool of users accesses the program.)
Concurrent use is governed by the user's network administrator and their local network. Concurrent access is controlled by an integrated concurrent metering utility or external method (eg, metering software programs). You may use either the metering software included with Reference Manager or a third party product to meter simultaneous access.
Installation is restricted to a single network server where it is used solely as a server application.
Advantages:
The main advantage of the concurrent use licence is it offers an economical way to support a broad pool of occasional Reference Manager users.
Potential disadvantages: There are two potential disadvantages with a concurrent licence. One is that users can only access Reference Manager while connected to the network. The other is that if all concurrent accesses are active, then other users will be denied access to the program.

Network Installation Details:
The Reference Manager Network program is installed on a network server, or workstation (based on the licensing option chosen). Once the program is installed onto the network or local hard drive, a separate workstation installation must also be performed on each workstation. Version 12 includes an MSI installer to make mass installation simple !
Access Rights:
The Reference Manager Network program allows the network administrator to assign user rights for full access privileges or read-only privileges. Rights are set-up at the network operating system level.
The network program also allows users to open databases in various modes when selecting Open Database from the File Menu. Under access rights, users may select from these options: Read-Write Share, Read-Only Share or Read-Write Exclusive. (Note, however, that a user's access options are first governed by the access rights set-up by the network administrator.)
